Is the same test I saw Oprah take on the Oprah Winfrey show?
Yes, we use the same testing equipment provided by the same medical supply company. In case you are curious, Oprah's test indicated she should eat around 1600 calories per day in order to lose a pound of body fat per week.
How do you measure my metabolic rate?
Your body consumes a fixed amount of oxygen per calorie burned. We measure the precise amount of oxygen in the air you exhale to calculate how much oxygen your body is consuming. Based on your oxygen consumption, we then determine the exact amount of calories you are burning.
Why should I have my resting metabolic rate tested?
Everyone has a unique metabolic rate. Scientific studies show that even people with similar attributes like age, height, weight, and body composition can have very different metabolic rates. This means that if your metabolic rate is lower than average, you may gain weight even while dieting. Conversely, if your metabolic rate is higher than normal, you may never need to diet to lose weight. Metabolic testing reveals how many calories your body burns at rest, giving you the data you need to plan a weight loss, gain or maintenance plan designed to succeed.
What are the steps of a metabolic rate test?
After collecting and entering your body data (age, height, etc.) into our metabolic tester, you breathe into a disposable mouthpiece to gauge your oxygen consumption. Our testing equipment determines when you reach your “resting” metabolic rate, and it prints a detailed report showing your results and what they mean for you. The actual testing takes between 5 to 15 minutes.
How should I prepare for my metabolic test?
We measure your resting metabolic rate. As a result, it is important that you be able to reach a resting state during your test. You should avoid activities such as exercise or stressful situations that will prevent you from relaxing for at least two hours prior to your test. Digesting a large meal, as well as taking stimulants, such as caffeine, can raise your metabolic rate and should also be avoided prior to your test.
What can I do to increase my metabolic rate?
One of the greatest factors that determines your metabolic rate is genetics, which you obviously cannot change. But another factor is how much muscle (lean body mass) you have. People with more muscle tissue usually have higher metabolic rates. Adequate sleep, decreased stress, small frequent meals, adequate water consumption, and regular exercise also can increase your metabolic rate. Consider taking part in one of our monthly boot camp sessions, which emphasize cardio and strength training to burn daily calories and increase your metabolism.
How often should I have my metabolism tested?
Many factors can affect your metabolic rate. These factors include body composition, exercise, and diet. Changes in any or all of these factors can alter metabolic rate during the course of a weight loss regimen. Considering these factors, you might want to consider being re-tested monthly or every other month. Re-testing allows you to see how your diet and exercise program is impacting your metabolism. Your goal is to increase your metabolism over time.
Is your metabolic testing system accurate?
Our metabolic testing system is extremely accurate. We use a system provided by the same organization that provides metabolic/VO2 testing equipment to the Orlando Magic. For details on testing accuracy, review the following two white papers: Metabolic Testing Accuracy Validation Report and Metabolic Testing Clinical Accuracy Test Using the Douglas Bag Method. How much does metabolic testing cost?
The cost of a metabolic test is $65.
